Tärendö village
Tärendö village lies 80 km north of the Arctic Circle, 45 km from Pajala, 100 km from Gällivare and Överkalix, in Norrbotten County, in an area called Tornedalen. Tärendö lies at the point in Pajala Municipality where the Kalix River joins the Tärendö River. At 50 km, Tärendö River is the world's second largest bifurcation, taking its water from the Torne River just above the village of Junosuando. Tärendö offers tranquillity, pure water and many sources of inspiration.
The Midnight Sun shines here in summer, and in the cold, snowy winter, the Northern Lights dance across the sky. Today, Tärendö has about 520 inhabitants. Tärendö tries to preserve as much as possible of its history and old buildings. The Tärendöholmen area with its "fire festival" is widely known in Norrbotten and attracts large numbers in summer. Today, Fredrik is the driving force behind the fire festival. Our world-class skiing star Charlotte Kalla was born and brought up in Tärendö.
