Native Spa, the new health trend from the north
Freshly handmade spa-products laid out in the form of a delicious delicatessen buffet. Way up north, the Tornedalen Finnish culture has preserved its traditional health cures which are now considered ultra modern and great for health and wellbeing. The old treatments kept the people of the Tornedalen region healthy and contributed to them living to be very old. The new Native spa concept starts with a detox sauna. Water, with pine needle essence, is thrown on glowing hot sauna stones formed originally from minerals in the local bedrock. The steam that forms contains a blend of microminerals, vitamin C, chlorophyll and antioxidants that strengthens the skin.
Those suffering from asthma find, for example, that it is easier to breathe after spending some time in the herb and mineral sauna. This is followed by a gentle slapping, using a bundle of leafy birch twigs called "vasta", said to increase blood circulation, soften muscles and ease joints. Forest Hotel makes its birch scrub from the finest and most tender birch leaves. A small amount of bright apple-green scrub is brought into the sauna where the wonderful aroma of fresh birch, newly in leaf, begins to waft through the air.
The scrub is massaged over the entire body, after which it's a case of relaxing and enjoying the warmth of the sauna while allowing the scrub to do its work - drawing out and removing impurities from the body and, it is said, strengthening the immune defence. After that, a mild sauna honey with a scent of summer is applied over the entire body. It is claimed that the honey restores damaged skin, hydrates and contracts the skin pores. Finish off with a quiet swim in the clear waters of the Tärendö River gently flowing past, just outside the sauna - a swim in one of the cleanest rivers in Europe. Now, all that remains is to take a seat at the table to enjoy a tasty GI-inspired meal made from locally found ingredients, full of vitamins and antioxidants.
